Description

This identification / buyers guide has been written for those interested in the 1967 Shelby GT 500. The 1967 Shelby GT 500 is seen as one of the most desirable, if not the most desirable American production sports car in history, due to its motorsport success, and cult status derived from the 'Gone in 60 Seconds' movie remake. The 1967 GT 500 was produced in fastback form only, however, there was one 1967 GT 5080 convertible prototype made. This convertible is considered particularly special as it was technically the last Shelby Mustang convertible car to come from the Shelby American Inc. factory.

As the 1967 Shelby GT 500 can effectively be recreated from a standard 1967 Mustang fastback, accurate identification of these cars is particularly important. Below, relevant information is provided for the GT 500, including interior and exterior features, as well as detailed engine and chassis number identification criteria.

19767 Shelby Gt 500 statistics:

Numer Produced: 2,050 (Including 2,048 standard fastbacks, 1 notchback concept, 1 convertible prototype).

Period of Manufacture: 1967

The Ford Mustang Shelby G.T. 500 will have two relevant chassis numbers, one being a Shelby VIN, and one a Ford VIN. Their form and location are outlined below.

Shelby VIN/Serial/Chassis number:

A basic 1967 Shelby GT 500 VIN is as follows :67400F2A00001 (subject to the below decoding)

  • (67 = Year / 4 = Engine (4 = 428ci) / 0 = Transmission (0 = 4 speed, 1 = automatic) / 0 = Base vehicle component (0 = base vehicle, 1 = Ford air conditioning, 2 = Thermactor exhaust emission, 3 = air conditioning and Thermactor exhaust) / F = Body style (F = fastback) / 2 = Exterior colour code (See the letter and colour codes available under ID requirement #3) / A = Interior trim (A = Black, U = Parchment or White) / 00001 = Consecutive individual unit number between 00001 to 3225

Location on body:

  • The stamped Shelby ID plate is located on the driver’s side inner fender panel, where the there is a slight cut out in the fender (see image). It is riveted to the inner fender over the Ford VIN.
  • Secondly, the Shelby VIN is stamped on the passenger side inner fender, halfway between the firewall and radiator (the fender usually needs to be removed to see this).

Ford VIN/Serial/Chassis number:

The correct Ford VIN for a 67 GT 500 Fastback will generally be in the following format:7R02Q XXXXXX

However, please note that the VIN on many of these cars (especially the early vehicles), doesn't indicate a "Q" engine code as the 5th digit of the VIN.

  • 7 = Model year  1967 / R = Assembly  Plant (San Jose) / 02 = Body Code (2-door fastback) / Q = (428 Police Interceptor motor) / XXXXXX = Individual consecutive Ford production number (each model year, each assembly plant begins production with the number 100001 and continues for each unit built).

Locations on body:

  1. Stamped into the driver's side inner fender panel; at the cut out point underneath the Shelby VIN plate.
  2. Stamped into driver's side inner panel at the rear edge of the suspension tower (Need to remove fendes to see this).
  3. Stamped into passenger side inner fender panel, at the rear edge of the suspension tower (Need to remove fender to see this).
5. Engine Number - 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT 500
GT 500 engine.jpg 1
C6ME- 428 block.jpg 2

Ford used an FE 428 Police Interceptor engine for the 1967 Shelby GT 500.

Unlike the GT 350 cars, the Ford VIN was not actually printed / punched on the engine block, therefore making it difficult to confirm whether the engine is in fact the original for that particular vehicle. However, it is possible to confirm the correct type of engine is installed in the car, simply by identifying the casting marks on the block.

A 1967 Shelby GT 500 will have a casting prefix on the engine block of C6ME. See images for a better description of the typeface and location of this casting mark.

The presence of this number should confirm that the motor is a 428 motor.
